Garage Door Technician Wins National Downhill Championship

A Utah-area garage door technician recently won the national championship in downhill mountain bike racing in the 25-29 age group.

Spenser Mehr of Mehr’s Garage Doors in St. George, Utah, won the title competing in the 2010 USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championship held at the Sol Vista Basin Base Lodge in Granby, Colo., on July 17.

Mehr posted a 2:40:28 time in a 1.2-mile mountain course to take honors in the downhill contest.

“It was three pretty intense minutes of racing,” Mehr said of his accomplishment. He beat his next-closest competitor by more than two seconds — almost a lifetime in the downhill.

The win completed a remarkable accomplishment for Mehr, who came into the event without a biking corporate sponsor, and without the fanfare of some of his competitors.

Is he as good of a door installer as he is a racer?

“You bet. I am pretty serious about doing things well,” Mehr said of his installation skills. His parents, Robert and Debbie, started the garage door business selling and installing Martin Doors in southern Utah in 1987.
